Toby Sumpter and CrossPolitic grant that preferring married households with a parent at home, inside federal childcare money that will be spent anyway, is better than farming fraud or fatherless incentives. They keep calling that preference the same genus of ruin: socialism, welfare, the destruction of the family it pretends to honor.\[1\] Those two claims cannot both be true of the house.

Call the preference **R**: marriage and a parent at home, as a condition on money already in motion. Call **(G)** the ranking they grant: R is better for the house than farming the substitute. Call **(D)** the genus they keep: R is the same ruin — the destruction of the family. **(G)** and **(D)** cannot both be true of the house.\[2\] If **(G)** is a ranking of household-effects, R and the substitute are already different acts. A sword that can tell them apart is already doing civil knowledge of the family. If “ruin” in **(D)** is said only of the tax, the charge has changed the subject from the family to the funding source. Preferring the intact house inside a stream that already exists is not yet becoming the house’s rival head.

### The genus word is not the design

Call **K** a grant that replaces the father and writes the house rules. Call **(S)** the claim that R is already K. Their first move is too wide.

(1) R is a tax-funded household transfer.

(2) Every such transfer is socialism.

(3) Socialism is K.

So **(S)**.

Premise (2) is too wide: if true, the child exemption and the marriage adjustment would already be socialism, and already K. They do not want that conclusion. Premise (3) equivocates: tax-funded is not the same fact as replacing the father or writing the house rules. They describe AFDC-type arrangements and then treat R as if it were already that arrangement. The conclusion does not follow.

Insisting on the word “socialism” is offered as load-bearing for freedom of mind. Allies who will not utter it are the scandal. What would establish **(S)** is evidence that *this* design replaces the father or writes the house rules. The word is not that evidence.

### The nurse and the banned design

The magistrate as nursing father is **N**. From that office, and from the fact that money already chooses, it follows that if he spends, he must not treat the substitute and the household as equals. **B′** is the banned design: the nurse who keeps the child weak in order to remain necessary — cliffs, tutelage, teaching intact houses to defend the tap as identity. R can be N without being K if the design is not B′ and does not write the house rules.

They warn that once intact houses are on the rolls, later cuts will be called an attack on stay-at-home mothers, and that the path runs toward a permanent stipend. Leave the warning standing. Call that lock-in **T**. T is a risk of B′. It is not yet **(S)**. A client class is not a rival husband. Answer T with design: no cliffs, honest rationing, no house rules, shrinking the stream kept as a distinct act. Do not pretend T is imaginary. Do not let it do K’s work.

Strings must belong to this design ([The King’s Coin](https://www.pietaspublica.com/the-kings-coin-and-the-household/)). A parenting curriculum on the check would make that statute K, and **(S)** would then be true of *that* statute. This preference, as they describe it, has not attached one.

### Remaining dollars are not leftover magic

Call **C′** shrinking or deleting the stream. They argue:

(4) Most of the childcare stream must be reappropriated yearly.

(5) Therefore C′ is possible.

(6) R without C′ blesses the program.

So **(S)**, or at least betrayal.

I grant (4) as budget arithmetic. (5) does not yield (6). Distinct acts. A man may press C′ and, if a remainder will be spent this year anyway, refuse to spend that remainder as if marriage and a parent at home were invisible. A new claimant class on a fixed pot is rationing, not leftover magic — say the cost ([Money Already Chooses](https://www.pietaspublica.com/money-already-chooses/)). Honesty about rationing is N. (6) is the night watchman calling every remaining dollar a blessing of the tap.

The preference they report is the next act while the purse is already held: stop treating substitute and ordinance as equals in this year’s dollars. C′ remains a distinct act. Demanding (5) as the price of admission to R leaves this year’s dollars farming the substitute. That is the one thing N may not do while he still spends.

### Same word, opposite arrow

Walter Williams is read on air: the welfare state did to Black Americans what slavery, Jim Crow, and the harshest racism could not — destroy the Black family. Extending the genus to married houses, they say, will do the same. Williams on AFDC, therefore Williams on R, therefore **(S)**.

The analogy is hasty when the mechanism is missing. AFDC’s check selected against the house. R’s check, as stipulated, selects for the house. Same word “welfare,” opposite arrow. Keep the warning: B′ destroys. Williams is evidence about fatherless-selecting welfare, not yet about a marriage-selecting condition on an existing pot.

### Who counts as married

They raise a hostile hypothetical: “funding mom” funds whatever the state now calls marriage. If the statute uses the present civil predicate, R inherits that predicate. That is a definition fight, not proof of **(S)** for natural households. Marriage is one man and one woman. N tells the truth about the ordinance. A model that uses R only with a true account of marriage is coherent. A model that will not is already a false account of the good — the same error as treating substitute care as parental care.

## Conclusion

They grant **(G)** and still keep **(D)**. That pair cannot both be true of the house.\[2\]

K is real. From that it does not follow that R is already K, which is **(S)**. Later work — design without B′, exemption rather than grant, C′ as a distinct act — completes the office. It is not the ticket that makes **(G)** righteous.

The king’s coin is dangerous. A sword that will not know the house is also dangerous. A nurse who will not let the child stand is a third danger. Denying **(S)** is the refusal of all three.
