Later Is Not Never
James White named the empty square. The thin civil sentences he already granted still have to speak in it.
He named the empty square. Psalm 33:12 still has to be allowed to mean something today.
James White will not bless the myth that the public square is morally empty. Neutrality, on his telling, cripples the church. Secularism cannot ground a stable law. Drag queen story hour is what borrowed capital looks like when it comes due.[1] It is Christ or chaos. The church must tell the magistrate what Christ requires, and the telling must be lived.[2] On that ground this series and White stand together. Call that refusal N. N is right.
The word he reaches for is sacralism. He does not mean a Christian vote, or a Christian man on the bench. He means the blur in which church and state forget their offices. A land that calls itself Christian, puts unconverted men inside the name, and then uses the sword to keep the name in place. The story that comes with the word is Fritz Erbe, lowered into the dungeon of the Wartburg for refusing infant baptism, the sacrament preached down the shaft, Luther consenting because disorder was worse.[3] That memory is real. A gospel that needs a dungeon to secure a sacrament has already confused the keys with the sword.
I will not take the word as my own. This series already has names for the thing White fears — the offices collapsed, the church unable to say no — namely E₂ and co-option: when God remains in the room as furniture for power.[10] Two offices under one Lord keep the dungeon from answering every civil question. His word will not. It fits Erbe. It does not fit every civil claim made after Erbe is remembered.
The question is not whether that refusal is right (it is). The question is whether, after N has been named and the dungeon remembered, call the thin civil definition he has already granted D: a nation whose God is Yahweh, sin known as sin, magistrates who fear God. The question is whether D is allowed to govern now, or is postponed until a future revival makes the subject safe. Naming N and remembering Erbe is not the same act as letting that definition do public work.
(1) White rejects N.
(2) White uses “sacralism” for a church-state blur he refuses.
(3) White has granted D.[6]
(4) From (1) and (2) it does not follow that (3) is permitted to govern present civil speech.
(5) If (3) is regularly deferred until an outpouring White does not now see, then (4) is what is happening.
(6) “Sacralism” is his label. It does not govern this argument.
The smaller claim.
White is not a chaplain of the regime and not a salesman of private piety as the whole of obedience. He calls himself a theonomist in the plain sense that God’s law is the standard and autonomy is rebellion, while refusing to ship Moses’ penal sanctions out of Israel as a crate.[4] He talks with Doug Wilson in public rather than treating Mere Christendom as a crime scene.[3] He has put his name to public language that keeps patriotism and refuses blood-and-soil ultimacy and the thesis that Jews run the world.[5] Anyone who casts him as a soft secularist has not listened. After N was named, the thin definition in (3) still has to be allowed to speak. What follows is the ways it is asked to wait.
Sentences he already owns.
Mechanics without new hearts produce baptized pagans and a gospel-shaped prison. Isaiah’s coastlands are not a campaign for next Tuesday. Wolfe’s stream, as White reads it, is neither postmillennial nor theonomist and ends in the blur he calls sacralism. An office of Christian prince that treats regeneration as optional furniture is the Theodosian road, and that road has produced horror in Christ’s name. Drag queen hour does not license a return to that horror. The dungeon and the empty square are a false binary.[1][6] He will not spend his life defending every fool who wears a brand he has refused.[6] Grant all of that.
Some of it is right. Baptist memory of coerced religion is not theater. Christless racial religion is poison. A regenerate magistrate is not a baptized empire. If “incomplete” is redefined to mean “anyone who will not wait for a census of the regenerate and will not let Fritz Erbe silence Psalm 2,” the charge is no longer about White’s sentences. It is about impatience. The narrower question is whether (3) is still postponed after N has been named.
Three acts that are not one.
The warning is tight when he keeps it tight. Sphere sovereignty is real. Keys are not swords. Putting the unregenerate into a Christian frame by force dishonors Christ. That blur — the state as the church’s enforcer, the church as the state’s chaplain — is E₂ and co-option.[10] It ought to be refused.
Three acts are nevertheless distinct.
- (a) a converted magistrate ruling in light of God’s law, which White himself affirms;[6]
- (b) the offices fused: swords that treat regeneration as optional furniture in a Christian state;
- (c) a racial or Christless nationalism that replaces the gospel with blood, grievance, or a people-key that explains the world.
White is right to refuse (b) and (c). On paper, the thin sense he allowed is not (b). A regenerate magistrate under God is not Theodosius. Peoplehood under Christ is not a hole in the Wartburg. When the public sorting treats those as if they were already on the way to Erbe, the warning has begun to do hallway work. His word licenses the slide because it can name (b) and then drift over (a). That is why the term is not accepted here as a rule. The definition, when tight, left a door open. The polemic closes it.
He has pointed listeners to the sweater-vest talks with Wilson for the fuller record.[6] The Baptist question asked there is fair: how do you keep a thicker Christian public order from becoming a dungeon.[3] Fair questions still require fair distinctions. Flattening (a) into (b) fails a standard White has used in other fights: do not misstate the other man.
(7) (a), (b), and (c) are not one act.
(8) Treating (a) or (3) as already (b) is invalid, even when (b) and (c) are rightly refused.
(9) A label that gathers (a) and (b) under one heading is not precise enough to govern the argument.
Patience is not a veto.
“Build for it. Work for it. Pray for it.”[6] That is not cowardice. White is right that the knowledge of the Lord filling the earth is not a next-Tuesday plan.[3][6] Patience can be a Christian virtue.
The question is what the calendar does to the standard. “I am not seeing that outpouring right now” is a report about the weather of revival.[3] It is not a veto on what a converted magistrate owes God this afternoon, or on what a people may confess about sin and worship before the census turns. Jeremiah’s promise that the law will be written on hearts does not mean the magistrate who already has a new heart must legislate as if Locke were Lord until the coastline fills.[6] Spirit-first is a claim about how a Christian public order becomes thick without becoming a lie. It is not a claim that Psalm 2 waits in the vestibule until the sociologists say go.
That is how the postponement works. N is named. The dungeon is remembered. The civil question is then asked to return after an awakening large enough to make the mechanics safe. Later is not never. Later, said often enough beside Fritz Erbe, begins to function as never for anyone who wants (3) to do public work now.
(10) Patience constrains timelines.
(11) Patience does not entail that (3) is silent until an outpouring White does not presently see.
(12) If (10) is used as if it entailed the silence in (11), (3) has been postponed rather than governed.
A brand refused, a noun underfed
White will not call himself a Christian nationalist, and he will not babysit every fool who will.[6] Brands get captured. That refusal is his right. He has already said what thin sense would include him. He has already said converted magistrates belong under God’s law. He has already said the church must witness to the state. Those are positive claims. When the internet is on fire, the airtime goes to his word “sacralism,” to Christless nationalism, and to the next fringe scandal.[7] The thin definition appears as a concession on the way to a warning. Warnings still need a noun that can stand in the weather without becoming the Wartburg. He does not owe a movement his brand. He owes his own thin sentences equal weight when he teaches.
(13) Refusal of a captured brand does not entail underfeeding (3).
(14) If (3) appears only as a preface to a warning, (3) is not governing.
Two sentences, not one word.
Not Franco. Not Mahler. Not a Baptist forced to pretend Erbe did not happen.
It would mean keeping the dungeon as a warning about (b) and still allowing (a) without a hallway. It would mean saying that “blessed is the nation whose God is Yahweh” is not a costume for Theodosius. It would mean distinguishing Wolfe’s errors, where they are errors, from the peoplehood question without making revival-statistics the only gate. It would mean letting patience govern timelines without silencing the standard patience is supposed to serve. It would mean arguing the blur in terms that do not smuggle (a) into (b).
Until those are paid, “I reject neutrality” is sincere about N and unfinished about the thin civil sentences in (3). Fritz Erbe is a real warning. Psalm 2 is a real claim. They are not the same sentence, and they are not one word.
(15) (1) can be true while (5) remains true.
(16) Erbe and Psalm 2 are not one sentence.
This is not a baptismal food fight, and it is not an account of a man who has made peace with the empty square. White still teaches thousands to hate N. That work is not nothing. The tension is not in the Wartburg. It is in letting the Wartburg answer Psalm 2, and in a word that makes the postponement look like a definition.

8. N is local to this note and neighbors E₁. E₁ is the empty square: the myth that the public square is morally empty and the magistrate a clerk of nothing (Essay V, The Myth of Neutrality; also named in Essay VI, When the State Co-opts Religion). White rejects N. D is the thin civil sense named in the body and granted in (3). The question is postponement of D, not occupation of E₁.
9. “Thin definition” means only the sense White allowed on 17 October 2023 — not Wolfe’s full program and not a theocratic seizure.
10. The series terms for what White calls sacralism, when the word is used tightly, are E₂ and co-option. E₂ is the rented pulpit: God left in the room as furniture for power, the church unable to say no (Essay VI, When the State Co-opts Religion). Two offices under one Lord is the grammar that keeps that fear from eating (a) and (3). The term is refused as a governing noun because it is not kept that tight in the polemic.
