*Essay IV of* Christ, the Nations, and the Public Square

[Essay I](https://www.pietaspublica.com/christian-nationalism-vs-christian-patriotism/) owned a name and distinguished an affection from a claim. [Essay III](https://www.pietaspublica.com/america-was-never-a-christian-nation/) refused to treat America as Zion. The next charge is almost automatic. If nations are real, you must mean blood. If you love a people, you must mean a race. If you will not give the name away, you must be a kinist who learned to write in complete sentences.

That sentence does two jobs. It names a real error. It also works as a smear, so that Psalm 2 never gets a hearing. We will not throw anyone under a bus to look clean. We will not let opponents define the claim as kinism or as hatred of the Jews. The error is refused. The smear is refused. They are not the same refusal.

## What a people is, and is not

A nation is not the church. The visible church is “not confined to one nation, as before under the law” (WCF 25.2). Persons are baptized. Peoples are not. A people is a creaturely bundle under providence: a language, a law, a land, a memory, a common life that lasts long enough to be handed down. It is thicker than a market. It is thinner than a covenant of grace.

“From one man he has made every nationality to live over the whole earth and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of where they live” (Acts 17:26). Both halves stand. From one man: no people may treat blood as election. Appointed times and boundaries: nationality is not a liberal embarrassment and not a pagan god. It is a given. You may receive a given without worshiping it. You may also refuse to pretend the given is a fiction because the fictions are easier to manage.

Peoples mix. They absorb. They forget and remember. They are not species. They are not churches with flags. They are not interchangeable economic zones with airports. The man who cannot tell those sentences apart will call every particular love a crime, or every crime a particular love.

## Ordered love is not a racial gospel

[Essay I](https://www.pietaspublica.com/christian-nationalism-vs-christian-patriotism/) already said that love has an order. This page will not rebuild that argument. It will only keep the analogical shape from being stolen.

You honor what is given without making it God. You provide for your household without calling the household the kingdom (1 Tim 5:8). You seek the peace of the city where you are sent (Jer 29:7). You do not call evil good because it is yours, or good evil because it is theirs. The fifth commandment is about father and mother. The analogical shape still holds: gratitude for a people, a tongue, a land, and a law is not idolatry until you make those things save.

Kinism, in the use that matters here, is the error that treats race as a kind of covenant. Blood starts to do the work of baptism. Peoplehood hardens into a ranked ontology. The gospel acquires a pedigree. The neighbor becomes a problem of stock. That is not patriotism. It is not the claim that Christ is Lord of the nations. It is a different religion wearing a nation’s coat.

We refuse it because it is false, not because refusal is the ticket price for speaking in public. “From one man” is not a press release. “There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free, male and female; since you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Gal 3:28) is about union with Christ, not about the magistrate pretending that peoples do not exist. The verse that levels boast in the church does not turn the world into a single undifferentiated crowd with no fathers.

Antisemitism is not a spicy accessory to that error. It is a refusal of the canon. The church is not a European clan. The promises run through Israel according to the flesh and then open, in Christ, to the nations (Rom 9–11). Paul will not let Gentiles boast over the root. He will not let anyone treat Jewish people as a civic devil. A political theology that needs that hatred has already left the confession these essays use.

Distance from those errors is not a denunciation written to confirm the enemy’s frame. The frame wants a ritual. Denounce the designated men, then watch the definition slide until the remaining target is any Christian who thinks the sword is under God. We will not perform that ritual. We will state the truth and keep the name.

## The smear that needs the error

Charity still has to say how the word is used against us.

In the smear, Christian nationalism means white nationalism, and white nationalism means the claim. The method is compression. Find the worst man who will take the label. Treat him as the definition. Then every argument about magistrates, statutes, and public piety becomes a referendum on him. A smear is not an argument. It is a way of making you do the opponent’s editing.

The compression works best if you help it. If you spend your pages proving you are not those men, the pages never arrive at Psalm 2\. If you pretend those men do not exist, you give the smear its favorite sentence: they will not even admit it. The third way is slower. Name the error. Keep it from becoming the whole of the name. Return to the claim.

A people may seek magistrates who know they are under God. A people may want civil law that still knows the moral law in its civil use. That does not require a racial census of the regenerate. It does not require second-class persons by blood. “Do not deny justice or show partiality to anyone” is not a modern discovery (Deut 16:19). Impartial judgment is not the myth of a naked square. It is the magistrate remembering that the man before him is an image-bearer, not a mascot for a stock.

## What we are not saying

We are not saying America is Zion. [Essay III](https://www.pietaspublica.com/america-was-never-a-christian-nation/) already killed that confusion.

We are not saying the church has a preferred race. The church has a preferred Lord.

We are not saying the magistrate should hunt heretics with the sword as if he held the keys. He does not hold the keys.

We are not saying gratitude for a particular inheritance forbids repentance. Love that will not tell the truth is flattery. This country has bought and sold image-bearers. It has broken faith with peoples who were here first. Those are disgraces. They are reasons to repent. They are not reasons to call every ordered love a prelude to a pogrom.

We are not saying nations are final. “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ” (Rev 11:15). Until the end, men still live in times and boundaries. The end does not make the middle a sin.

## Keep the particular, keep the gospel

The catholic church does not abolish peoples. It gathers them. Pentecost does not erase tongues. It makes them confess one Name. A Christian nationalism that forgets the church catholic will turn the nation into a false church. A public piety that forgets particular peoples will turn the neighbor into a theory.

The claim remains the same. Christ is Lord of the nations. Nations are real. The magistrate is under God, not God. Blood is not a covenant. The gospel is not a pedigree. We will not surrender the name because someone used it to baptize a clan, or because someone else used the clan to forbid the name.

[Essay V](https://www.pietaspublica.com/the-myth-of-neutrality/) will take the myth that the public square can be morally empty. That myth is doing more work in this argument than most of the men who get quoted as warnings.
