*A front door to* Christ, the Nations, and the Public Square

If the phrase *Christian nationalism* makes you flinch, you are not strange. The fright has sources. Some of them are real abuses of the name. Some of them are a story told so often that a moral statute starts to sound like a coup. Neither source is the claim these essays keep.

We will not surrender the name. We will not sand it down into “mere patriotism,” or “a Christian view of the magistrate,” as if the claim were a social problem and the affection were the safe remainder. [Essay I](https://www.pietaspublica.com/christian-nationalism-vs-christian-patriotism/) already refused that move. Patriotism names an affection. Christian nationalism, in the use this site keeps, names a claim: Christ is Lord of the nations. Nations are real. The magistrate is not God, but under God. The church has the keys. The state has the sword. The public square is never morally neutral.

That is not Mussolini. [Essay II](https://www.pietaspublica.com/what-fascism-actually-is/) said why, with a historian’s definition rather than a mood. That is not America-as-Zion. [Essay III](https://www.pietaspublica.com/america-was-never-a-christian-nation/) said why. America was not a *machina sine Deo*—a machine without God—either. “Never a Christian nation” is a slogan that treats those as the same thing.

What startles people is often not that cluster. It is a costume hung on the cluster. Forced conversion, a racial gospel, the politician as savior, the church as a civic department: [Essay I](https://www.pietaspublica.com/christian-nationalism-vs-christian-patriotism/) named those as errors, not as the thesis. [Essay IV](https://www.pietaspublica.com/particular-peoples/) takes the compression that makes a people mean a race. Naming the errors is not a purity ritual offered to opponents so that we may keep a smaller word. It is ordinary Christian refusal. The abuse of a name is not a reason to hand the name over.

If you want the claim stated without the scare-story, start with [Essay I](https://www.pietaspublica.com/christian-nationalism-vs-christian-patriotism/). If you want the American past without the meme, read [Essay III](https://www.pietaspublica.com/america-was-never-a-christian-nation/). If the next sentence in your head is that particular peoples must mean kinism, that is [Essay IV](https://www.pietaspublica.com/particular-peoples/). Then the essay on neutrality ([Essay V](https://www.pietaspublica.com/the-myth-of-neutrality/)), then the essay on the state co-opting religion.

*Pietas publica* is public piety: a people’s duty toward God in common life. It is not a private hobby. It is not a party platform. Flavius Iustinus writes as himself. Scripture in the Christian Standard Bible and the Westminster standards are the ordinary grammar. Disagreement on political theology is not heresy. America is not the church. Christ is still Lord of the nations.

Keep reading, or don’t. Do not let a slogan do your reading for you.
