*The Politeness Criterion* left a question standing: what sort of magistrate Moore would actually prefer, and whether that preference can survive contact with any available President.

He would not sign the Politeness Criterion as a creed. The official ticket is more respectable than that. Personal virtue. Limited power. Religious liberty for the man who is not in your congregation. No cult of personality. No baptizing the sword. In 2016 that ticket kept him off both major lines: neither Trump nor Clinton, because either would have been, for him, a sin against conscience. In 2023 he said the never would stay never. He was not an Evangelical for Harris. The record is consistent on one point. He will name who is forbidden. He still will not name who is fit.

The official goods are not the problem. The church has used most of those sentences for a long time, and should keep them. The problem is how they are ranked when they do not arrive together.

These are not a platform he printed. They are the goods he will not stop naming.

Let

M₁: ordinary personal character

M₂: judges and laws that do not treat unborn life as a nullity

M₃: a state that does not bind Christian institutions

M₄: truth-telling, and a refusal of contempt as a political instrument

M₅: a pluralist posture toward the groups he will not see used as props

Call this the Admissibility Condition: a magistrate counts only if M₁–M₅ are all present. It has the great advantage of never having to choose.

A standard can be failed in different ways and still rank the failures. A President may fail M₁ and M₄ and still do the work of M₂ and M₃. Another may pass M₄ and the public presentation of M₁ and spend his term testing M₂ and M₃. Moore’s practice is to treat failures of M₁ and M₄ as spiritual emergencies and failures of M₂ and M₃ as policy disputes you may have while still saying “President.”

A decisive test requires all five at once. In this republic the man who can win while doing M₂ and M₃ will usually fail M₁ and M₄. The man who passes M₁ and M₄ will usually fail M₂ and M₃, or will not be President. If the criterion is the conjunction, it does not choose. It abstains, then moralizes the people who would not abstain.

That is why “who would he prefer?” is not gossip. If he will not name a type that has existed on a ballot—the establishment conservative who keeps his voice down, loses, and leaves the agencies where he found them—then the ticket was never a theory of the magistrate. It was a theory of remaining unimplicated.

Grant him the self-description again. Character. Witness. Limited power. Those are real. They do not explain the asymmetry Post I named. They do not explain why honor-the-office is the register when the administration is polished and hostile, and emergency is the register when the administration is rude and, on the points that actually touch schools, hospitals, and hiring, less hostile. If M₁ is permitted to count only when the man is already the antagonist, it is not a standard. It is a filter.

Christian realism, in the modest sense I mean it, does not require a saint. It requires the admission that the available men will fail M₁ and M₄ in some measure, and that M₂ and M₃ do not therefore vanish. Preferring shelter to exposure is not a creed. It is what a people does when it still intends to baptize its children in public.

If Moore has another type in mind—some third man who satisfies the Admissibility Condition and also exists—he should produce him. Until then, the Politeness Criterion remains the working theory, whatever he would call it.
